How do I Write to Object to a Post Office Closure?

Question

My Post Office is closing. I have been asked to write to object but I don't know what to say.

Answer

There are some helpful hints on what to include in your letter, provided by the Essex Rural Partnership (see http://www.essexruralpartnership.org.uk/postoffice.asp) who have a dedicated page for Post Offices.  From here you can download a template letter, and see some useful hints included in an advice sheet (this can also be downloaded).

Send you letter to:

Sheila McCann, Network Development Manager, c/o National Consultation Team, FREEPOST CONSULTATION TEAM or e-mail consultation@postoffice.co.uk

Local consultations on the closures are taking place across the country in phases and each area is consulted for 6 weeks; in Essex the deadline is 19 November 2007 but you will need to check the deadline for your own area - your local sub-post master can confrim this, or you can find out by visiting the Post Office website at http://www.postoffice.co.uk/portal/po/content1?catId=57600693&mediaId=57600696 to find your own consultation dates.

It is a good idea to copy all letters to Postwatch. Postwatch is the regulatory body for postal services. It is the job of Postwatch to ensure that the Post Office consider all objections to closures - if they have a copy of your letter they can make sure that your objection is properly considered and if it is disregarded they must be given the reason why.
