What are the rights of fathers regarding child care?

I was wondering where fathers stand regarding child care because one of my colleagues works 9.30 to 6pm and her husband works 6.45am till 2.45pm and picks their child up from school. This has been going on for 3 years now and they have recently had a change of management at the husband's workplace and now they want to change his hours from what they were to 8 till 4pm. This makes picking up their child difficult as the child has additional learning and mobility needs and the father takes the child to physio based activity classes after school. With the change of hours, this will have to cease and the husband and wife are worried about the effect on their child.

Hope someone can advise.
