Do the Equality Regulations apply to a Christian volunteer group?

One of our members has asked whether they are in contravention of any legislation regarding discrimination and/or whether their policies are discriminatory. Basically, they are a Christian group undertaking prison visiting, for which they get paid by the Prison Service. This work involves writing groups (with pen pals) and life skill groups. The life skills group is based around Christian values and uses parables. The problem is that they will only use practising Christians as volunteers; anyone wishing to get involved has to get a reference from their minister. Furthermore, they will not accept homosexual volunteers.

Could you advise as to the legality of their practice and any amendments they could or should make to their practice.
