How do I get my DVD to play smoothly under Vista

I am trying to run a DVD on my laptop (Vista) through a new projector. The DVD is jumpy, sound is spasmodic. I have gone into Device Manager and it says that the IDE is not working properly. I have searched to check that it is up to date. Can you help!!!!!
